THE PROJECT

Dream Yard and Parsons The New School for Design are partnering for a Learning Portfolio (LP) Pilot, in which the best practices for teaching the LP process are developed and shared via a Design Team of seven in and out of school high school educators and two Parsons faculty. The Design Team will meet monthly to share their experiences with portfolio development and give each other feedback on how they are implementing the learning portfolio process in their classroom. At the end of the pilot in February example student learning portfolios, educator reflections, and best practices learned will be shared through a digital narrative.

THE PLAN

All the educators will be expected to attend monthly meetings. Most of these meetings will be at DY Prep or the DY Art Center. The educators will be expected to take what they learn about learning portfolio development in these meetings and plan how to incorporate it into one section of your current classes for at least part of the 2013-14 school year. The Design Team will share best practices and challenges with each other at the meetings, but each of educator will have the ability to adapt what we are doing to their specific needs and classroom environment.

We are estimating that participation in this pilot will take about 40 hours outside of classroom time between now and February. Meetings will be about 20 hours of that time. Planning will be about 20 hours with more of those hours required at the front end.

Digital Learning opens doors, for both the teacher and the students. It can streamline data collection and visualize collaboration.

I was most excited to see ways that digital learning and portfolio building strategies could be enacted in courses outside of visual art and design.
